I’d never felt like more of a jerk. Not for hitting the tiger shifter at the bar—and he was definitely a tiger. I could smell that on him. But no, not for that. Even a breed as disloyal as a tiger should have known better than to treat a woman the way he had. No, I felt like a jerk because Lucy had wanted to go to that bar—to drink and dance and have a good time.

I’d ruined her evening.

I simply couldn’t have allowed that man to treat her so poorly—to disrespect her wishes and put his hands on her when she hadn’t wanted him to. He’d grabbed her ass after she’d clearly told him she wasn’t interested. The tiger was lucky he still had teeth. Still, I hadn’t been in a fight—been in the kind of trouble losing my temper like that could bring—in a long time. A very long time.

I was way too old for that sort of shit.

I pulled up at the B&B and killed the engine, hurrying out to help Lucy down. I had yet to say a word to her, had yet to try to explain myself. I needed to, though. Especially if this was us saying goodnight. I wanted to take her back to my place, tuck her into my bed, and wrap her body in my scent. I wanted that badly, but I also didn’t want to push her or assume. Especially not after the scare at the club. She could be in a fragile state. I’d drop her off and leave her alone if that was what she wanted.

And then I’d sleep under her window again.

“Lucy,” I said once we reached the porch, knowing it was time to apologize. “That guy totally deserved the punch I threw at him, but I’m so sorry for ruining your night.”

“You didn’t ruin anything.” She didn’t rise up to offer me a kiss, though. Just turned and opened the door. My heart sank and my body went cold as I stared at the floor. This was it. The moment she told me to go away. That she decided I wasn’t—

“Would you like to come inside?”

My eyes flew up to meet hers, to catch the fact that she was smiling at me with her hand out. Inviting me in. My mate was…needing an answer.

“Yes, I would.” I followed her inside, excitement brewing in my belly. Heat, too. I couldn’t help but glance down as she walked, eyeing the curve of her ass in that dress. Staring at all that skin revealed below the hem. Yeah, the guy at the bar had seen the best-looking girl and gone after her. I couldn’t blame him for trying when Lucy looked the way she did. He just shouldn’t have manhandled her or called her a bitch when she rejected him.

“This is me,” she said, opening a door inside the house and stepping through it, holding it open for me to pass her. The room was cute…neat and tidy, decorated well…but not her.
